India won the first t20I game against New Zealand by 53 runs in the three-match t20 series. It was the first time India defeated New Zealand in a T20I game. It was also the farewell match of Ashish Nehra but went wicketless. It was unfortunate for him as Hardik Pandya missed an easy catch off his bowling but congratulations to him on his 18-year long career from our team. There was an emotional send-off to him from the home crowd as well.
New Zealand won the toss in the game held at Feroz Shah Kotla in New Delhi. They opted to field first in the dew-affected match. As always openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit grabbed the opportunity and their part’ship of 158 is the highest for India in a T20I game. Both the duo scored 80 runs while Virat Kohli played a cameo of 26 off just 11 deliveries as Pandya was out for a duck. Dhoni hit a six off the very first ball he faced much to the crowd’s delight as India posted 202/3 in their 20 overs.
New Zealand had a daunting task ahead as they were to score 203 in their 20 overs. Hardik Pandya completed a brilliant catch at long off to remove Martin Guptill. While wickets continued to fall on the other end. Tom Latham played for a while but was not able to play fast or as the run rate was reqd. and same happened for Williamson(28) while Santner was not out for 27 but it was too late by then. Axar was economical among the bowlers and picked 2 wickets by giving away just 20 runs in his quota of four overs.Yuzvendra Chahal also picked up 2 wickets.
