Virat Kohli’s men continue to create problems for the Lankans this time at the Eden Garden Cricket Stadium in Kolkata. It also means Sri Lanka is yet to register a test victory in India.
It was the opener of the 3 test match series between two teams. India were bowled out at a meagre 172 runs in the first innings of the test match. Cheteswar Pujara showed a good persistence with the bat with a well made 52(117). Fast bowlers Suranga Lakmal and other pacers created problems for the hosts in the pacer friendly conditions. Lakmal picked 7 wickets in the match.
They managed a lead of 122 runs in the first innings where Thirimanne, Mathews and Hearath scored half centuries. While India had atremendous start in the second inngs with openers KL Rahul scoring 79 and Shikhar Dhawan missed on a century (94).
Skipper, Virat Kohli scored (104*) his 50th international hundred to help India gain a lead of 230 runs setting a target of 231 for Dinesh Chandimal led Sri Lanka side who collapsed in the middle order only to survive the match by 3 wickets.Sri Lanka were in good condition after 3rd innings but lost the momentum in favor of the opposition.
Pace bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar was declared Man of the Match for picking 8 wickets in the match while Mohd. Shami also scalped 6 wickets in the first test. The first two days of the match was affected due to rain.
