Ireland cricketer Niall O’ Brien on Friday announced his retirement from international cricket.

The wicket-keeper batsman made his international debut against Denmark in 2002 and went on to play 216 matches for Ireland in his 16 year career.

The 36-year-old is famous for his match winning performance against Pakistan in 2007 World Cup.

He’s played county cricket for Kent, Northamptonshire and Leicestershire.

However, Niall’s younger brother Kevin O’ Brien will continue to play cricket

Author’s take:

Ireland have no fixtures until the end of World Cup next year where they will host England. They failed to qualify for the World Cup, so it is a right and timely decision by Niall to announce his retirement from international cricket.
